Aker Brygge

Aker Brygge is an area on the former ship yard of Akers Mekaniske Verksted. The halls were rebuilt as shopping areas in the 1980s. Today, there is a cinema, restaurants, bars, apartments and much more.

Charles XIV John

The Plaza

Fio and Lindab, you're right! "Oslo Plaza" is Northern Europe's highest (117 metres) and Norway's largest (673 rooms, 1500 beds, 140 business rooms and 20 suites) hotel. It is located close to the main railway station. The building was opened on March 14, 1990.

The City Hall

Some call it "The pride of Norway", some others just "aggressively ugly". However described, you are supposed to know it, if there is a glimmer of interest and knowledge of Norway. The City Hall is located in Pipervika in central downtown Oslo, and it is probably the best known of all sights. It is also the place where Nobel prize for peace is given to the winner on 10th of December each year.

The Royal Palace

Let's think of yesterday's photo and walk 800 meters along the main thoroughfare. Now we are in front of Oslo's Royal Palace. It is used as the official residence of Norway's current monarch, King Harald V. The statue in front of the building is of King Carl XIV Johan. During the summer season they open up the palace to the public.

Karl Johan Street

Karl Johans gate is Oslo's main street and connects the Royal Palace (situated on a hill at the far end) and Oslo Central Station. The massive building on the left is the Norwegian Parliament, called Storting. My picture was taken during the Nobel Days 2008. You see, Norway's most famous boulevard is all decked out with banners.

The Opera House

Heisann, this is another Oslo Daily Photo blog, modelled on great oslodailyphoto.blogspot.com – I am going to attempt to post a picture of Norway's capital every day. Wish me luck! Let's get started with the Opera House, the town's new landmark, located on Bjørvika peninsula. The building is brand new – opening ceremony was just in 2008. The design by Snøhetta won a range of architectural competitions. My picture was taken from the skyway, which connects the Opera House and Oslo Central Station.
